Taurine, chemically known as 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid, is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is widely distributed in animal tissues. It has the molecular formula of C2H7NO3S and a molecular weight of 125.15.

It has many biological roles in animals, such as conjugation of bile acids, antioxidation, membrane stabilization, cell volume regulation, and osmoregulation. It is essential for the function of neurotransmitters, glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, growth regulation, vision, and calcium homeostasis.
